Sometimes, the smallest choices lead to life-changing passions. For Vijay, that moment came in 2015 during a period of recovery from health challenges. Looking for ways to pass the time, he turned to writing. That decision, paired with the purchase of a Traveler’s Notebook, led him into the world of fountain pens—a discovery that would shape his creative journey.

If you're about to embark on your own journey or already in the middle of it, we hope Vijay's story helps inspire and encourage you to keep going!

What inspired you to get into fountain pens?

My journey into fountain pens began unexpectedly. In 2015, I was facing some health challenges and found myself on sick leave from work. This downtime provided an opportunity to practice writing using analog tools. I'd always enjoyed using different pens, but never seriously considered fountain pens. However, I decided to purchase a Traveler's Notebook (TN) Passport size, and that's where it really started. The smooth, high-quality paper in the Midori notebooks inspired me to explore new writing instruments, and that's when I stumbled upon the world of fountain pens.

What did your first setup look like? What was your first fountain pen?

My fountain pen journey truly began with a simple yet elegant setup: a Midori TN Passport and a TWSBI Mini. The Mini, with its piston filling mechanism and choice of nibs and compact size, quickly became my favorite pen. I initially used a Fine nib, but later expanded my writing options with an extra 1.1 Stub nib. While I already owned a few other fountain pens, the TWSBI Mini's versatility and affordability made it my go-to writing instrument. Soon after, I added a Pilot Vanishing Point (Matte Black) to my collection, with its unique retractable nib.

With his new notebook in hand, Vijay sought out the perfect writing tool and that search led him from one fountain pen to another. As his enthusiasm grew, so did his collection!

As in taking nib to paper, this chain of choices has led him right where he is, into a flow that has now become an enjoyable hobby.

Was there a turning point that made you realize this was something you wanted to "pursue" in life? As in actively post on social media and share your passion to people online?

My passion for fountain pens really took off when I joined a Facebook group dedicated to Traveler's Notebook enthusiasts. This online community opened my eyes to the incredible world of fountain pen inks, papers, and writing accessories. I was fascinated by the variety and craftsmanship involved in this hobby. Inspired by the friendly and enthusiastic community, I decided to start my own Facebook group (Midori Traveler's Notebook & Fountain Pens) and shared my interests with other enthusiasts.

His journey journey didn’t stop at collecting pens: Vijay eventually connected with others who shared his enthusiasm through a Facebook group which led him to starting his own, bringing together fellow enthusiasts to share their knowledge and experiences.

If you're learning something new or starting a collection of just about anything, one of the things that really makes our journey more fulfilling is the power of community! When like-minded individuals come together to enjoy and celebrate a common interest, there's a lot of learning and love to go 'round.

How has your journey with fountain pens evolved over time?

I experimented with a variety of inexpensive pens to discover what I enjoyed. This also led me to explore the vibrant world of ink colours, moving beyond the traditional blues and blacks I gravitated towards. Today, my collection boasts a diverse range of fountain pens, spanning various price points, nib sizes, nib materials, and a huge array of ink colours and brands.

In addition, I've developed an appreciation for the quality of paper. This has become another exciting avenue of exploration -- the world of notebooks! I've discovered the joys of writing on exceptional papers like Tomoe River and Ayush, which truly bring out the best in fountain pen inks.

How has your collection or way of collecting fountain pens changed over the years?

Meeting other enthusiasts at pen shows has been invaluable. These have provided me with opportunities to try a wide range of pens and nibs, significantly expanding my collection. While I initially used Fine or Medium nibs now my preferences have evolved. Today, I enjoy a wide selection of nib sizes, allowing me to choose the perfect writing experience to suit my mood and the task at hand.

What is your favorite fountain pen accessory and why?

Choosing a favorite is difficult, as I have a large variety of cases, pouches, and notebooks. But as I previously mentioned, paper quality is important plus I need something portable. This is why the Lochby Pocket Journal paired with the Lochby Tomoe River notebook has become an essential part of my EDC.

Starting with budget-friendly options, Vijay gradually developed an appreciation for inks, moving beyond basic colors to a world of vibrant shades and unique properties. This curiosity extended to high-quality paper, proving that the right combination of tools can enhance the writing experience.

More than that though, meeting other fountain pen enthusiasts has really shaped not only his collection but hobby as a whole. Attending pen shows introduced him to new perspectives, rare finds, and a deeper understanding of craftsmanship.

Can you share a memorable story or experience related to your journey?

I recall my first visit to the pen show in Litchfield, UK. Despite its small size, the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming. I had the pleasure of meeting several traders and collectors, many of whom have since become friends. I was amazed by the sheer variety of pens on display, from the latest releases to vintage and spare parts.

What has been the most rewarding part of sharing your journey on social media?

Social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram have connected me with a global community of fellow enthusiasts. Through these platforms, I've made friendships with individuals near and far, sharing my passion not only for fountain pens but also for the entire range of related accessories. I enjoy the interactive nature of this community, whether it's providing guidance to newcomers or simply sharing my collection and thoughts with like-minded individuals.

What's a fun fact about you that your followers might not know?

When I originally got interested in Traveler's Notebooks, I learned how to craft my own leather covers and designed and created custom inserts and notebooks to perfectly complement them using simple bookbinding techniques.

Do you have a day job, and if so, what is it?

I work in the IT department of a major global vehicle manufacturer. Currently, I hold the position of Country IT Director for the United Kingdom.

How do you balance collecting fountain pens and posting about them on social media with other aspects of your life?

To maintain a focused online presence, I maintain a separate profile specifically dedicated to my fountain pen passion. This allows me to curate a space specifically for sharing my enthusiasm with fellow enthusiasts. While I still use my personal profile, my primary focus is dedicated towards the fountain pen community.

Thanks to a small UK pen show that introduced him to collectors who became friends, this proves that real-life interactions can deepen a hobby in meaningful ways. Social media took this even further, connecting Vijay with a global community where he shares knowledge, offers guidance, and engages with fellow enthusiasts.

His experience also shows that passion and profession can coexist with the right balance. Despite a demanding IT career, he carves out space for his fountain pen hobby, demonstrating that with intention and structure, personal interests don’t have to take a backseat to work.

How do you stay motivated to continue what you’re doing?

I write in several daily journals (health tracker, daily diary entry, 5 year diary short entry), which has become a habit and great for my mental well-being. I consistently use different fountain pens and inks in these journals, providing me with daily opportunities to enjoy my collection. Also, connecting with other enthusiasts online and attending pen shows allows me to share my passion with others, which I find incredibly rewarding.

What are your future plans or goals related to your passion?

I used to have a small YouTube channel but due to family and work commitments I did not continue with content creation  I would really like to get back to creating video content in 2025

How did you discover Lochby?

Back in 2020 while searching for a Field Notes-sized notebook cover I came across the Lochby Pocket Journal. I was drawn to the rugged aesthetic of the original brown canvas cover (it was the only colour available at the time). I placed an order for a Pocket Journal and one of the original Quattro cases, both of which remain in my collection and  frequently used items.

By making fountain pens part of his daily routine, Vijay already stays motivated which, paired with another practice, journaling, not just supports his well-being but also gives him a reason to use different pens and inks regularly. Connecting with other enthusiasts online and at pen shows adds to the enjoyment, keeping his passion alive.

We're glad to know that his Lochby gear has played a part in his hobby's enjoyment and look forward to return to creating video content in 2025!

What advice would you give to someone just starting to collect fountain pens?

  • Cleaning your pen regularly: Dried ink can build up and clog the feed if it's not cleaned regularly.
  • Avoid buying too many pens quickly: I recommend starting with a few and gradually expand your collection.
  • Try different nib sizes: Different nib widths can have a big impact on writing experience so experiment with different nibs to find the perfect fit for you.

Are there any common mistakes beginners should avoid?

  • Don't press too hard: Fountain pens are designed for a light touch. Pressing too hard can damage the nib.
  • Be careful on to use the wrong ink: Some inks are not compatible with all fountain pens and using the wrong ink can clog or damage you fountain pen.
  • Using poor quality paper: The quality of the paper you use can affect the writing experience.
  • Avoid FOMO or aesthetics: While the looks are important, it is important to consider how the pen writes and feels in your hand.
